Mon Calamari

Mon Calamari is a planet almost entirely covered by ocean, with little land and extensive shallows. The world is inhabited by two sentient peoples: the Mon Calamari, who build floating cities on the surface, and the Quarren, who prefer the depths; their coexistence was more than once complicated by disagreements.

The planet is known for shipbuilding: the local shipyards produced large star cruisers whose streamlined hulls were originally intended for peaceful transport, but were converted for military needs and formed the core of the Rebel Alliance's battle fleet. One of the Alliance's chief fleet commanders also came from here.

Under the Empire, the planet's population was subjected to enslavement, which pushed it into an alliance with the rebels. Later, after the loss of the capital world in the war with extragalactic invaders, Mon Calamari temporarily hosted the highest bodies of the New Republic.
