Raith Sienar develops the battle planetoid design
The designer Raith Sienar prepares plans for an expeditionary battle planetoid, a huge mobile station. This design will become the starting point for the project from which the Death Star later grows.
Description
Raith Sienar came from a family that for millennia had owned the Santhe/Sienar Technologies conglomerate. Having grown rich while still a young man by scouting hyperspace routes, he took over the business after his father's death and for decades built ships for wealthy clients who disliked publicity, treating every task as an engineering puzzle. At the same time, his longtime acquaintance Wilhuff Tarkin drew him into a plan to capture Zonama Sekot — a world that produced living ships. Sienar was given command of a squadron, but Tarkin had designed the operation from the outset to fail, so that he himself could appear as the savior. The Sekotans fought off the attack, and the planet escaped into hyperspace on its own engines, and the failure threatened Tarkin with disgrace. To salvage the situation, Tarkin presented Palpatine with the plans for an expeditionary battle planetoid — a three-sphere mobile station with a weapon of monstrous power, in which Sienar himself had by then lost interest. It was this design that formed the basis of the future Death Star. Sienar, meanwhile, after the proclamation of the Empire, headed Sienar Fleet Systems and created the TIE fighter.
