Separatist Crisis

c. 24 BBYApproximate dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

The mass secession of systems from the Republic brought it to the brink of collapse even before open war began.

Description

Discontent had been building for decades: outlying systems complained of bureaucracy, corrupt senators, and the Republic's inability to protect them from pirates, while taxes kept rising. The movement was led by Count Dooku, a former Jedi Master who had left the Order, which gave his speeches the weight of a moral indictment rather than a mere political dispute. Within a few years, thousands of systems left the Republic and united in the Confederacy of Independent Systems. It was joined not only by worlds but also by the largest conglomerates, the Trade Federation, the Techno Union, the Commerce Guild, and the InterGalactic Banking Clan, whose own armed forces and manufacturing capacity far outweighed those of the Senate. The Republic, for its part, had no army at all and relied on the Jedi, of whom there were about ten thousand in the entire galaxy. The key issue became the dispute over the Military Creation Act. Some senators insisted on urgent armament, while others, including Padmé Amidala, believed that this would make war inevitable. While the Senate argued, the crisis escalated into open conflict, and the powers of the executive began to expand.
