Battle of Jakku
Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.
The last major battle of the war: the remnants of the Imperial fleet were defeated, and the Empire signed its surrender.
Description
After the death of the Emperor at Endor, the Imperial state broke apart into scattered fragments: some territories were held by individual governors and Moffs, while Grand Vizier Mas Amedda remained a powerless figure in the capital. In a year of fighting, the New Republic took over most of the galaxy and convened a senate on Chandrila, while Counselor Gallius Rax drew the surviving fleets together in a remote desert sector. Rax was playing a double game: outwardly he was preparing a decisive battle, but in reality he was carrying out Palpatine's posthumous orders and intended to lead a chosen few, including Commandant Brendol Hux, into the Unknown Regions. His plan to destroy the planet together with both fleets was thwarted by Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, who killed Rax at the height of the battle. Fighting on the surface dragged on for several more months, but the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Amedda and Chancellor Mon Mothma signed the Galactic Concordance: reparations, arms limitations, and the handover of Coruscant. The surviving units became a local Imperial remnant, and part of the fleet departed beyond the edge of the galaxy.
