Blockade of Ryloth

The Confederacy's invasion of Ryloth came in the first year of the Clone Wars: droid units destroyed the small Republic garrison, and the Separatist fleet defeated Admiral Dao's arriving squadron. After that, a permanent blockade was established over the planet under the command of the Neimoidian captain Mar Tuuk. The blockade rested on a Lucrehulk-type battleship and six Munificent-class star frigates, reinforced by droid starfighters, and reliably cut Ryloth off from supplies. The population, deprived of food and medicine, found itself on the brink of famine; the only aid was delivered by Senator Bail Organa's ships, which slipped through the line and handed over cargo to the Twi'leks and to Cham Syndulla's resistance fighters. The plight of the civilians and appeals to the Senate forced the Republic to prepare to lift the blockade. The first attack by Anakin Skywalker's task force was repulsed: Tuuk called in reinforcements and forced the Republic forces to retreat with heavy losses, which made a second, riskier breakthrough attempt necessary.
