Kessel

A planet inside the Akkadese Maelstrom, in the Kessel sector of the Outer Rim. The climate is hot and humid, and the world teems with life. The northern hemisphere is almost entirely given over to the mining of spice, coaxium, and Kessel stone, while untouched preserved areas remain in the southern hemisphere.

It is believed that the source of the spice was the turbulent space surrounding the planet: over the ages, debris ejected by the singularities of the Maw cluster and the Akkadese Maelstrom accreted into planetary mass, and the mineral-rich world gave rise to lush nature with enormous forests.

Kessel remained a key world in the spice trade, and slave labor was used in production. In the Imperial era, mining here was conducted by the Galactic Empire and the Pyke Syndicate; these mines became a target for both criminal groups and rebels. The planet's notoriety was such that being sent to its mines was considered almost the worst fate.
