Scattered resistance to Imperial rule coalesces into a single Alliance; the moment of its formation cannot be determined from the available primary sources.
Description
After the proclamation of the New Order, resistance to the Empire long remained fragmented: planetary cells and guerrilla groups acted independently and often did not know about one another. The link between legal politics and the underground was provided by Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, who channeled funds to illegal groups through intermediaries. The first shared structures took shape about five years before the Battle of Yavin, when groups began to coordinate strikes and share supplies; however, they had no unified command, and the participants differed in their goals: some sought the restoration of the Republic, while others waged their own war against Imperial garrisons. The alliance was formally established only two years before the Battle of Yavin. The formation of the Alliance stretched over a decade and a half and was completed only when the regime's open crimes made legal opposition impossible. The resulting organization took the name Alliance to Restore the Republic, and Mon Mothma became its civilian leader.
