Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

Placed on the Council at the chancellor's behest but not granted the rank of master, the Jedi grew fully estranged from the Order.

Description

The Jedi High Council consisted of twelve Masters and was located in the Great Temple on Coruscant. The Council selected its own members and itself oversaw adherence to the Code, and during the Clone Wars it took on a leading role in the Grand Army of the Republic, working together with the Supreme Chancellor and the military authorities. The Council's relations with Chancellor Sheev Palpatine grew increasingly tense over the years of the war, and they became especially strained after Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker was placed on the Council as the representative of the head of state's office. Being seated on the Council by someone else's will violated the long-standing practice under which the Council chose its own members, and the Masters did not grant the appointee the rank of Jedi Master. The rift proved irreversible. It soon emerged that the Chancellor was in fact Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith; several members of the Council tried to remove him from power but failed, and the Order itself was destroyed by Order 66 that same year.
