Appearance of a Sith on Naboo

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

A fight with a dark side warrior was the first confirmation in centuries that the Sith had not vanished.

Description

The Order had considered the Sith extinct for about a thousand years. The first encounter took place on Tatooine, where an unknown warrior with a double-bladed lightsaber caught up with Qui-Gon Jinn right next to his ship and was shaken off only by the vessel's takeoff. After hearing the report, the Council acknowledged that the enemy was trained in Jedi combat techniques but could not determine who he was. The second encounter came during the liberation of Naboo: the same warrior blocked the Jedi's path in the Theed power generator complex. The fight was split apart by the corridor's force fields; Qui-Gon was killed, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, left alone, cut his opponent in two and threw him down a shaft. The outcome proved more important than the duel itself. The death of a Master at the hands of an opponent who wielded the dark side meant that the Sith Order had not died out. Yoda concluded that there are always two Sith, a master and an apprentice, and that consequently the second remained alive and undiscovered. It was with this conclusion that decades of fruitless searching began, which the Order carried out without suspecting that the enemy was operating within the Republic itself.
