Depa Billaba's fall to the dark side

22 BBYExact dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

Jedi Master Depa Billaba, sent to raise a resistance on Haruun Kal, loses contact with the Order. A recovered recording of her voice reveals madness and cruelty, and Mace Windu, arriving on his home planet, becomes convinced that his former Padawan has turned to the dark side and is guilty of war crimes.

Description

Depa Billaba, a Chalactan by origin, was rescued from pirates as an infant by Mace Windu and became his Padawan. She mastered to perfection Vaapad, the forbidden combat form he had created, which requires accepting an opponent's fury and turning it against him, and which therefore carries the danger of slipping to the dark side. Renowned for her wisdom and preferring to settle disputes with words, she was appointed to the High Council as the youngest of its Masters. Her last assignment was the war on Haruun Kal, where she was sent to raise a rebellion against the Confederacy. Cut off from the Order, she waged a guerrilla war using methods that took her ever further from the Code, and gradually lost her sanity, turning to the dark side. Recordings sent from the planet forced the Council to send her former master to search for her. After a long pursuit, Billaba attacked Windu, but the fight ended not in death but in her falling into a deep coma.
