Siege of Mandalore

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

Republic forces, together with the Mandalorian resistance, took Mandalore's capital and captured Maul.

Description

Mandalore's neutrality in the Clone Wars did not save the planet: the former Sith Maul, with the help of a criminal alliance he had created, seized power, overthrew Duchess Satine Kryze, and installed a puppet prime minister, Almec. Some of the Mandalorians, led by Bo-Katan Kryze, rose up against him, but the resistance lacked the strength for a full blockade of the capital and turned to the Republic for help. Bo-Katan Kryze proposed a joint operation: the Republic would get Maul, and the Mandalorians their planet. The intervention was led by the former Padawan Ahsoka Tano and the clone Rex, promoted to commander, who led a separate unit detached from the 501st Legion. Maul's own expectation that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker would come for him was not borne out: both had been recalled to Coruscant. The capital was taken and Maul captured. Almost immediately, however, the order to exterminate the Jedi came through, the convoy carrying the prisoner was lost, and the Republic became the Empire. The victory lost its value: the Imperial troops who remained on the planet began an occupation, and Bo-Katan Kryze's regency proved short-lived.
