Han Solo escapes from Garris Shrike
A young man raised on a pirate ship under the rule of Garris Shrike decides to run away and hire on as a pilot on Ylesia. The escape is discovered; in the fight, the Wookiee cook Dewlanna mortally wounds Shrike but is killed herself, and her pupil leaves the ship on a cargo run, taking with him a knowledge of the Wookiee language.
Description
Orphaned at an early age on Corellia, Han Solo was taken in by Garris Shrike — a former bounty hunter who led a gang of swindlers and kept a ship whose crew consisted of children he had picked up. They were taught to steal, beg, and con, and were punished for failures; Shrike kept his charges in fear and did not allow them to seek another life. As he grew up, Solo decided to break with this existence. He planned to hire on as a pilot on Ylesia, where a drug production operation disguised as a religious cult was running, and prepared his departure in advance. The escape was discovered, and it came to a direct confrontation with Shrike, in which the Wookiee Dewlanna, who had raised the young man, intervened: she held off the pursuer, allowing him to get away, and was killed. Solo broke free and made it to Ylesia, beginning an independent life. The break with Shrike, however, was not final: his former guardian later tried more than once to bring him back or sell him, and the circumstances of the escape shaped Solo's attitude toward any obligations and his distrust of patrons.

In Legends, he was raised by Garris Shrike on a troop transport where children worked as beggars and thieves, and the young man ran away from his foster guardian. In canon, he grew up on Corellia among Lady Proxima's “scrumrats” and fled the planet together with Qi'ra, and their separation at the spaceport determined his entire subsequent fate. The place, the name of the gang's master, and whether the escape was made alone differ.
