Grievous destroys refugee ships at Belderone

19 BBYExact dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

Having cracked the Separatist code through a captured transmitter, Republic intelligence thwarts the invasion of Belderone. Realizing that the battle is lost, General Grievous fires on the evacuation ships before withdrawing: more than ten thousand people are killed, including twenty-seven Jedi.

Description

Republic Intelligence obtained information about the impending invasion thanks to Viceroy Nute Gunray's captured mechno-chair: through it, they managed to intercept a message from General Grievous to the Separatist Council stating that they would be moved to Belderone immediately after that world was captured. The Jedi High Council sent a force to the planet under the command of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. When Grievous's fleet emerged from hyperspace, it was met by a Republic battle group of sixty warships. Breaking through hundreds of droid fighters, the Jedi reached the flagship, and Skywalker decided on a daring attack. Bound above all to protect the members of the Separatist Council, Grievous chose to withdraw from the battle immediately: his ship opened fire on a column of refugees fleeing the besieged planet, killing about ten thousand people, and under cover of this confusion the fleet escaped into hyperspace. Formally, the battle was considered a Republic victory, but Yoda refused to regard it as a rout of the enemy. In addition, it became clear that the intercepted communications channel had been compromised and could no longer be used.
